According to the Pantone Color Institute, the company dedicated to forecasting color trends, the 2014 color of the year is Radiant Orchid, or Pantone 18-3224.
This “warm purple color with fuchsia and pink undertones” is “a multifaceted hue that is seductive when combined with red and goes well with shades of lavender, purple and pink,” note the Pantone experts.
Donna Mathis, president and founder of Haven Design Works, her model home merchandising company based in Atlanta, agrees.
“Radiant Orchid is a fresh, happy and modern color and is works well with a number of palettes. Already, I’ve been inspired to use this purple color with a variety of greys. And when I use it as an accent color, it gives today’s model homes a very current – and joyful – vibe!”
Radiant Orchid is touted by Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute as a color that “encourages expanded creativity and originality,” one that “inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health.”
“Even though purple is not an easy color to incorporate in your home, and Radiant Orchid might be too vivid to use on the walls of an entire room, I love the playfulness it introduces into a space. Think throw pillows, a beautiful glass vase, an accent rug – or even the walls (or ceiling!) of a powder room – with gleaming white fixtures,” says Donna.
Being in tune with current trends is a major part of the job for the model home merchandising experts at HDW. “Builders rely on our expertise and current knowledge, and even if Radiant Orchid would not have been their first selection, if we recommend the use of this bright color, most builders accept our advice – and then are very happy with the response of the potential buyers,” notes Donna.
